The beaches

The beaches are the biggest attraction in Puerto Plata. It’s a tourist zone that includes an array of golden beaches with an estimated area of 300,000 square meters. The main beach in Puerto Plata is “Long Beach” located just on the east along the Malecon. Is a public beach and is in the middle of the urban area of Puerto Plata. Here you can find luxury resorts.

The beaches are surrounded by coral reefs, so you can dive and snorkeling when the tides are good. Near Puerto Plata is the “Dorada Beach” is a beach of 24 kilometers long with white sand. And other beaches you can find here is Caño Grande and Mariposa Beach.

San Felipe Castle

This fort is located on the small bay of Puerto Plata. The bay is at the time of Christopher Columbus. The fort is, in fact, the only vestige of the colonial past of Puerto Plata. With a small admission fee, you can see the interior of an historical museum, and the tiny cell in which confined the hero of the independence movement: Juan Pablo Duarte. You´ll also find a group of tour guides around the entrance to the fort, you can give a trip you to explain all the historical details during the tour.

Brugal Rum Distillery

Brugal rum distillery is situated less than a mile east of the city limits, on the main road of Sosua, Playa Dorada. The distillery is open all week except Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. You don´t have to pay anything to enter, and in the reception area you will find a very nice guide that will escort you into the huge brewery which produces about million and half liters of white rum and red wine each year. Of course, here you can buy rum at discount prices per liter, as well as other memorabilia.

The Amber Museum

The museum is located in Puerto Plata and exhibits a huge number of amber and ancient fossils. This museum is located on the street #61 of Duarte, near Central Park. The house is a neoclassical architecture style. And it’s open every day except Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm.
