Cali City and its Traditional Cuisine and Food

A complete traveler’s destination, Cali an important Colombian city and his culture and traditions.

However, the Valley of Cauca river has traditional cuisine and food that are tasted with great pleasure for visitors of Cali who can enjoy a special part of the Colombian cuisine. For its relative proximity to the Pacific Ocean for example, the city has a strong identification with food from the sea, and on the other hand some dishes with ingredients such as rice and potatoes were born inside the Valley of Cauca. The sweet recipes are the most famous, because the Valley of Cauca is the leader region of Colombia in production of Sugar Cane.

The sancocho is very famous in Cali. It is a traditional chicken soup whose main ingredient is potato or banana and may be accompanied by any meat according to the customer's tastes: chicken, hen, fish, etc. Vegetables such as garlic or cilantro are included in the soup and the pepper gives it to this plate more flavor. The most widely eaten in the city and the department of Valle is the sancocho from hen.

In Cali, there are many places specializing in food from sea. In this case, there is a huge variety of sancochos of fishes ranging from red snapper, tilapia, nato (ñato in Spanish) and bocachico. Seafood, the soup of piangua and the rice with shrimp are the most requested recipes. Some of these recipes can be eaten with chancaca (molasses), which main ingredient is striped panela.

The bocadillos are quite popular in the gastronomic culture of Cali. We tell those bocadillos because they are not necessarily sold on restaurant meals, but are offered in almost any part of the city. In Cali on June 29, there a celebration called "Dia de los Ahijados" On this day are given a long wooden stick known as maceta, with candies embedded by all sides.

Other bocadillos are the melcocha, a sticky sweet made with honey, sugar and panela. It is very delicious, but we must bite strongly. The manjarblanco is a candy made with milk, sugar and flour and can be combined with fruits such as raisins. In Cali is very traditional because he´s served in a container called "totuma."

Definitely there are many other delights to be found in Cali. The mango biche (that is not ripe mango) with salt is quite consumed in the city, and a fruit called chontaduro is even more famous who Biche mango. The chontaduro can be eaten with salt, lemon or honey.

Finally, we could not fail to include some juices and drinks. Borojo juice, made from the fruit of a tropical tree, is quite popular and there are people that you attach properties aphrodisiac. The champus, very delicious, made from maize, cinnamon, pineapple and lulo, is a great delicacy that only in Cali city and Valle del Cauca province can be found.

Don't forget to eat fritanga in the feria de Cali, the most important carnival in the city or empanadas in the weekends and if you are a gentleman can be accompanied by Colombian women .. perhaps the most beautiful Latin girls (Latinas)
