Situated in the northern side of Buenos Aires, River Plate Club has been named after the river that passes through the region. Formed in 1901, this is by far the most influential soccer club in Argentina and owns the biggest soccer stadium in the whole of Argentina.
Visiting the stadium is a must in the itinerary of any traveler to Buenos Aires. Famous as the national stadium of Argentina, the El Monumental or the Estadio Monumental Antonio V. Liberti or the River Plate Stadium is situated in the Nuñez district in Buenos Aires. The first ever match played in the stadium was on 25th May, 1938 and was between River Plate, Argentina and Penarol, Uruguay and the former won the match 3-1. The capacity of the stadium is 66,645 and it sure is less of a stadium and more of a monument in Argentina.
Other popular teams are Independiente and Racing Club from Avellaneda neighborhood, San Lorenzo of Almagro and Velez Sarsfield in Buenos Aires; Estudiantes de La Plata from La Plata city.
The Argentina leagues are considered to be the strongest leagues in the futbol world. Many of the teams in Buenos Aires, Argentina, have won the Copa Sudamericana, and the Copa Libertadores, now they hold the Intercontinental Cup. One of the most recent tournaments was the 2008 Clausura, which the River Plate team won.
