“Ecuador loves life” is the motto with which the South American country is sold and promoted tourist. Focused on considering it as a friendly country and respect for nature, natural biodiversity and cultural diversity of peoples. That’s why Train rides stand out from this motto that has become very popular in Ecuador.
The Ecuadorian railroad trips out over their wagons with all the protections and amenities help to make one of the best courses in the world in all climatic zones of the nation, with stops at tourist locations, cultural, natural and commercial.
There was a lot of plans, projects and attempts to build the ferrcarril of Guayaquil to Quito from 1860 to 1874, the year the first locomotive arrived Miracle. Finally in 1895, when Eloy Alfaro was president of Ecuador, were contacted American technicians Archer Harman and Edward Morely, who were the representatives of an American company that was interested in building the “most difficult railway in the world” as it was called in this time. We achieved an agreement and “The Guayaquil and Quito Railway Company” began construction in 1899.
The tracks finally reached a huge obstacle – a rock wall almost perpenticular – called “Devil’s Nose.” Many lives were lost in the construction of what until now considered a masterpiece of engineering: a zig-zag cut in the rock, allowing the train back and forth to achieve the necessary height to Alausí. The train finally reached Alausí in September 1902 and Riobamba in July 1905.
From this point, the construction was easier. It was the highest point at 3,604 meters Urbina route in late 1905, and June 25, 1908 the railroad made its triumphal entry into Quito, and was received with bows of palm trees, laurel and flowers, tinged with bells, banquets, dances and popular festivals that lasted four days.
Later, in September 1915 began the construction of the railway between Sibambe and Cuenca. The laying continued slowly until finally in 1930 the railroad reached the site of El Tambo. In August 1945 the service opens up Azogues and March 6, 1965 is officially declared Basin Railroad.
One of the attractions in Ecuador and in the province of Chimborazo is this called “most difficult railway in the world.” This train departs from Riobamba and crosses what is called “Devil’s Nose“, which bears a striking decline to a steep cliff. The final destination of the trip is the city of Alausí. Originally the final was distinación Duran city in the province of Guayas, but some parts of the road have been destroyed over time by the phenomenon of “El Niño”.
