La Pedrera is a small, yet luxurious and exclusive resort of Rocha (Uruguay) with beautiful ocean beaches, active nightlife, multiple accommodation options (from excellent 5-star hotels to cabins and modern houses for rent) and a promenade that is difficult to let go of the memory.
La Pedrera is a large balcony of rocks that overlook the sea, with a red rock cliff. To enjoy the paradise views of its coast, there are benches along the promenade, where the sea can be seen and enjoyed. One of its sea’s surprises is that, if you look for long enough, you will be able to find whales in the horizon!
As mentioned, the beach Boat is excellent for surfer enthusiasts’. Returning to the Surf; this is an issue to be considered since this element could be quite dangerous for unsuspecting athletes. The east beach, unlike the other one, has fine sand and calmer water is very safe. This beach is ideal to go with children.
Every year, since 2004, the resort has its own film festival: La Pedrera Short Film Festival. A lot of short films are played, from Uruguayan and foreign artists. At every festival you can encounter all kind of movies, from ones for the little ones on the family and other ones especially for adults, such as drama and comedy.
The most important transformation in La Pedrera is during high season (January – March). These months, fans of diverse music styles (Rock, Techno, House, etc.) get together to enjoy a big mega event of music, where you have events, concerts, restaurants, pubs, nightclubs that offer live music, DJs on the streets spinning their records with their debut CD to sell. Anything that a music fan may imagine, you can find it on high season.
Tight budget options may include bars, pizzerias (where they sell marvelous pizzas) and even some reasonable-priced restaurants, but not too many. La Pedrera has become a spot where food fanatics can enjoy a variety of gastronomic restaurants with sophisticated environments; gourmet cuisine, ethnic food (sushi bars, for instance).
Although the money in Uruguay is much less powerful than the dollar, if you choose to travel to this hidden paradise resort, be sure to carry some money. Believe me, it will be worth it.
