Jamaican food

Like most Caribbean food, the food from Jamaica is based on fish, poultry, rice, fruits, vegetables and spices as a special highlight. Jamaica’s cuisine is so unique and special that once you try it, you won’t get enough of it.

It is a very healthy cuisine, and most of the meals that jamaican people eat are really healthy, unprocessed food and local ingredients like fruit called Ackee or Callaloo are really famous and really tasty as well.

But what characterizes the food and what actually is the symbol of Jamaica, are the spices. A huge variety of them are used to give food a very specific taste and touch, including ginger, curry and the best known is the pepper of Jamaica, with a strong and spicy flavor.

There are a bunch of dishes that you can try on the island, but Im just going to mention the most popular ones:
1. Merey the devil: This is actually a  fruit brought from Africa which has become one of the most widely used ingredients in the kitchen island. It can be prepared with fish to makesouffle and other popular recipes.

2. Pasties: This food is mainly made of meat or vegetables and it is not an 100% Jamaican original recipe, it actually comes from England.

3. Jerky: This is the most popular technique for cooking meat, fish and vegetables, pre-marinated in a base of peppers, cinnamon, nutmeg, garlic, onion, cloves, vinegar, soy and rum.

4. Green Papaya Chutney: When Columbus arrived, the natives were fed mainly papaya, which is a fruit from ancient times.

5. Blue Mountain coffee: is recognized as one of the best in the world, its price is quite high due to the production is really limited.

6. Pepper Pork Jamaica: Pepper is used to preserve food, this pepper is the result of combining ginger, cloves, white pepper and nutmeg, so this recipe is very popular and unique.

7. Rabbit Rum: Rum is always present in the kitchen and is really common in the life of the island.This dish requires at least 2 days of marinating and preparation, and is known for its intense flavor and exotic presentation.

8. Rastafari cuisine: Rice with beans and corn, juice sion, cassava bread, eggplant fritters, brownies and a couple of delicious drinks, form the rastafari cuisine in Jamaica. They say it’s good to be present when the Rastafarian food seasoned with herbs, so this is something that you have to try before you leave Jamaica.
