Cancun beaches, Mexico

Cancun is an important city of the Quintana Roo state south east of Mexico. Located in the northeast coast of the Yucatan peninsula it is essentially a touristic services city, and because of that Cancun beaches, in Mexico, are some of the best places in North American Caribbean. The island itself, well recognized, have an “L” shape (its about 13 miles long per a quarter Kilometer wide). The urban zone of this region for tourists has skyscrapers, hotels, and expanding touristic centers. Furthermore, its coast area have a lot of white beaches with white sand, palms, and reef without any raining season, as it happens around rainforests south of Quintana Roo.

Originally inhabited by Mayan indigenous, the area was described for the first time with the name of Cancun (which stands for “Vessel at the end of the rainbow” in Mayan native language) in 1843 the North American explorer John Lloyd Stephens and the British explorer Fredrick Catherwood on its classic work “Travel incidents in Yucatán”. Cancun is still a fishing zone and collection of little Mayan settlement from approximately 100 years ago. In 1970, after a 3-year research on the conditions by Mexican government related to some private sections, the area has been selected as a proper place to be an international tourism center.

In the previous decade, a constant flux of worldwide tourists had established Cancun as a successful experiment in the planning of a new city as a whole tourism zone. Most of the housing problems are even held in the urban side of the city, where nearly 30.000 workers lived in rudimentary huts. The Cancun city is connected north by highway to Puerto Juarezto and Puerto Morelos south. The international airport is located 12 kilometers south the city in the continent.

Cancun beaches are placed in a long coast zone and goes on in which you can have a lot of fun. There are two popular beaches for free; Playa Tortuga (Turtle beach) and Chacmool. Both of which have restaurants and exchange zones, and are also perfect places to enjoy the sun and show off a neatly tanned body. Although Chacmool has more shallow waters, do not let it fool you because of the calm, because waves can be really strong. South from here, there are less busy areas; so whenever you need some quietness and calm, head of the beach is about 20 or 21 kilometers ahead.

I went to Cancun to see the Coral Reef in Quintana Roo… There are partly submerged fringing reefs along much of this coastline, while from Xcalak southwards there is a fully developed fringing reef which continues to Ambergris Key in Belize, and then extends into the Belize Barrier Reef… We visited the whole area, it was really amazing.
