Bello Port

This city was founded in 1597 by Francisco Velarde. Centuries ago, this port was deposited all the gold from the colonies in South America, while a fleet of galleons was anchored in the bay to take on Spanish soil. These riches from places like Peru were kept in newly refurbished building of the customs. They were taken to the Portobello by mule through the famous “Camino de Cruces”, which began in Panama City and arrival to the village of “Las Ventas”.

Today this place holds a treasure as valuable: its rich history. In 1980 it was declared by Unesco as part of World Heritage. This legacy is preserved for its three thousand inhabitants, mostly black, descendants of slaves brought by the conquerors. They are engaged in fishing, trading coconuts and tourism services.

The Congos

One of the main traditions of the city is the drums of “Congos”. This usually occurs during the carnival in February. This tradition dates back to colonial times and slavery. It is a mockery of the kings of Spain and during the match, who lasts several days; the participants assume the role of blacks who run away from the Spanish. They hide in different parts of the city and taking captives.

The theme of the festival is that the characters that represent the Congos struggle with the devil that is everywhere these days.

They have a “Congo Queen” with the help of other characters. In this tradition is easy to see the syncretism between the African and the Catholic religions.

As you have seen, Colon it´s a special place than you cannot avoid in your visit to Panama.
